Ask for your opinion on a recent reworking of mine (San Marino).[edit]
Hi Aristeas, how are you? I remember with pleasure your beautiful words about one of my recent photographic works in San Marino: File:Fortress of Guaita on Titan mount - San Marino.jpg I managed to do better, but I believe that the image is too big. I wonder if in these cases it is appropriate to opt for a downscale, even if this option is not seen well by Wikimedians. I look forward to your kind answer without haste... Consider that it took me almost a month to fix all the stitch errors of the images, so, I can waitː File:Guaita_Fortress_-_San_Marino_-_2024_02_13_-_GT_01.jpg Terragio67 (talk) 22:38, 14 March 2024 (UTC)
- Hi Terragio67, thank you very much for your greetings! I have compared both panoramas. I liked the light and the left crop of the older version even better, but the resolution of the new version is incredible, congrats! Both are extremely valuable images; thank you very much for your work!
- Now to your question, I am torn here. Traditionally people often downscaled such huge panoramas, so that seems feasible, yes. But personally I always prefer the full resolution and my computer displays it without any problems ;–). But other computers may have problems, therefore I have added the {{LargeImage}} template to your image, as often suggested – it displays a warning. Maybe you better ask one or two more people to get a better impression if people would prefer a downscaled version. Let’s try that right now:
@Ikan Kekek and W.carter: Dear Cart, dear Ikan, could you please take a look at Terragio67’s new San Marino panorama and tell Terragio67 whether you would advise to nominate a downscaled version or this (very large!) full version? I am asking you because you belong to the most sensible and helpful people here and certainly can share a valuable vote. Thank you very much for your help! – Aristeas (talk) 16:02, 16 March 2024 (UTC)Sorry, Cart and Ikan, I now realize this was an odd idea; sorry for disturbing you. Probably it makes much more sense to ask just some panorama experts whether they would downscale such a panorama or not. --Aristeas (talk) 07:28, 17 March 2024 (UTC)- No worries! I was at work today and then had a St. Patrick's Day dinner with my girlfriend and her mother and watched movies, so I haven't had the chance to look at anything. -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 04:56, 18 March 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you, Ikan! As I see Terragio67 has nominated the photo in between, so it seems this question can be regarded as answered. Thank you again and all the best – Aristeas (talk) 10:34, 19 March 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you Aristeas and @Ikan Kekek. My question was objectively aimed at panoramas, in particular if in your opinion it is better not to exceed certain limits. In the end I thought it might be better to post a crop of the whole panorama on FPC. What better objective judgment could there be than that den of pictures experts? Terragio67 (talk) 11:02, 20 March 2024 (UTC)
- I'm no expert, just someone with reactions and opinions! And the reason I haven't voted on your nomination is that I'm still recovering from an injury to my hands and arms and haven't felt up to viewing that large a photo on multiple screens at full size, with all the scrolling that requires. But fortunately, it has seemed like my vote hasn't been needed. -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 17:33, 20 March 2024 (UTC)

Rollback right given[edit]
I have granted rollback rights to your account; the reason for this is that after a review of some of your contributions, I believe I can trust you to use rollback correctly by using it for its intended usage of reverting vandalism, and that you will not abuse it to revert-war. For information on rollback, see Commons:Rollback. If you do not want rollback, just let me know, and I'll remove it. Good luck and thanks. ─ Aafī (talk) 13:40, 21 March 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you very much, Aafī! I promise not to abuse the rollback rights. I will study the guidelines carefully. Best, --Aristeas (talk) 13:45, 21 March 2024 (UTC)

accidential deletings[edit]
I think these annotation deletings were accidential - i will revert/extend them with commons links. -- Schusch (talk) 22:30, 28 March 2024 (UTC)
- Hello Schusch, thank you very much for spotting that accident and for telling me about it! I am very sorry for the damage to all the image notes.
- How could that happen? For that edit I used the “Add {{information}}” link which calls the add-information tool. I know that this tool sometimes makes errors, but I was not aware that it damages image notes in such a terrible way. Obviously the tool did not (and maybe still does not) understand the image notes, regarded their text as “stray” text and hence appended it to the end of the “Description=…” field …
- Anyway I should have controlled the result of using that tool better. I will certainly be much more careful when using that tool again and also warn some people which I know to use that tool about this danger.
- Thank you very much for repairing and even improving the image notes! All the best, – Aristeas (talk) 08:28, 29 March 2024 (UTC)

Recent changes
- Web browsers can use tools called extensions. There is now a Chrome extension called Citation Needed which you can use to see if an online statement is supported by a Wikipedia article. This is a small experiment to see if Wikipedia can be used this way. Because it is a small experiment, it can only be used in Chrome in English.
- A new Edit Recovery feature has been added to all wikis, available as a user preference. Once you enable it, your in-progress edits will be stored in your web browser, and if you accidentally close an editing window or your browser or computer crashes, you will be prompted to recover the unpublished text. Please leave any feedback on the project talk page. This was the #8 wish in the 2023 Community Wishlist Survey.
- Initial results of Edit check experiments have been published. Edit Check is now deployed as a default feature at the wikis that tested it. Let us know if you want your wiki to be part of the next deployment of Edit check. [6][7]
- Readers using the Minerva skin on mobile will notice there has been an improvement in the line height across all typography settings. [8]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 9 April. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 10 April. It will be on all wikis from 11 April (calendar). [9][10]
- New accounts and logged-out users will get the visual editor as their default editor on mobile. This deployment is made at all wikis except for the English Wikipedia. [11]

Problems
- Between 2 April and 8 April, on wikis using Flagged Revisions, the "Reverted" tag was not applied to undone edits. In addition, page moves, protections and imports were not autoreviewed. This problem is now fixed. [12][13]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 16 April. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 17 April. It will be on all wikis from 18 April (calendar). [14][15]
- Default category sort keys will now affect categories added by templates placed in footnotes. Previously footnotes used the page title as the default sort key even if a different default sort key was specified (category-specific sort keys already worked). [16]
- A new variable
page_last_edit_age
will be added to abuse filters. It tells how many seconds ago the last edit to a page was made. [17]
Future changes
- Volunteer developers are kindly asked to update the code of their tools and features to handle temporary accounts. Learn more.
- Four database fields will be removed from database replicas (including Quarry). This affects only the
abuse_filter
andabuse_filter_history
tables. Some queries might need to be updated. [18]
