Future Earth at the UN 2023 Water Conference

Water is key to the prosperity of our planet – and its people. The UN’s goal for the 2023 Water Conference, being held 22-24 March in New York, is a bold Water Action Agenda to advance the challenges surrounding water.

Through our water-focused networks and initiatives, Future Earth is committed to using research to support the transition to water sustainability.

Virtual Side Event: Valuing Urban Water in Asia
Organized by UNU-IAS in partnership with other organizations including Future Earth

About the event: This session will explore water valuation for the purpose of water quality assessment, projection, and disclosure, and the need for awareness raising and green investment. It will focus on cities in developing countries in Asia where rapid urbanization has increased the need to address water related issues, such as clean water provision, sanitation, and water-related disaster management.

A Global Commons Alliance and Science-Based Targets Network event with participation by Earth Commissioner Stuart Bunn

This interactive session will help participants:

  • Understand the landscape of various corporate water target-setting initiatives.
  • Know how and when to engage with these initiatives along their water stewardship journey.
  • Get a deep-dive on the upcoming corporate freshwater science-based targets, part of the first science-based targets for nature from the Science Based Targets Network.

Future Earth’s Sustainable Water Future Programme and UNESCO have developed the idea for a science-based global water assessment. The assessment is novel in two ways: It would “take the form of a data-based, solution-oriented assessment underpinned by science” and it “would be the first global scientific assessment of water resources to be validated by an intergovernmental mechanism.” (UNESCO)
