At Future Earth, we believe that research, innovation, and collaboration can transform the world toward sustainability. We harness the experience and reach of thousands of scientists and innovators from across the globe. Together, this global community facilitates research, mobilises networks, sparks innovation, and turns knowledge into action.
A Systems Based Approach to Transformations in Global Sustainability.
Future Earth is working towards a sustainable global future by developing a deeper understanding of complex Earth systems and human dynamics across disciplines. We’re looking closely at the interconnectedness of Earth’s major systems–climate, water, land, ocean, urban, economic, energy, health, biodiversity, and governance systems–and developing evidence-based strategies for global sustainable development.

30 Years of Research in Global Sustainability and Science.
In 1986, the scientists and policy-makers that would later form Future Earth declared a growing need to study Earth as an interconnected whole in order to address global environmental issues. This mandate came at the spark of the internet and data revolution, enabling a wave of scientific collaboration and coordination beyond disciplinary confines that was, in many respects, unprecedented. How far has Future Earth come in three decades of environmental research? Our timeline tells the story.
