In a historical first, science will take centre stage in the 2023 World Economic Forum high-level plenary session. Johan Rockström and Joyeeta Gupta will preview groundbreaking science of an Earth Commission report due out in early 2023. This report outlines newly quantified ‘Earth System Boundaries’ designed to safeguard a stable and resilient planet and underpin the setting of science-based targets for businesses, cities and governments. Crucially, these new boundaries account for Earth system impacts and human wellbeing and justice.
It is the first-time justice has been factored into an assessment of the state of the planet, and represents a quantum leap in our ability to understand Earth’s capacity to sustain life, and of the role we humans play as guardians of our only home and each other.
