Support the Stockholm+50 Letter From Science to Fellow Citizens of Earth

In 1972 at the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment, 2,200 environmental scientists warned of an “unprecedented common danger” in a letter – the Menton Message. Ahead of the UN Stockholm+50 conference, Future Earth, the International Science Council and Stockholm Environment Institute convened scientists, engineers and scholars to write a new letter to the world.

The scientists’ letter – addressed to their then 3.5 billion neighbors – warned about the unprecedented common danger posed by the environmental crisis, by nuclear arms, and about the possibility of extinction of life on Earth.

Today, in 2022, the UN is commemorating that landmark 1972 event with a major international environmental meeting, Stockholm+50. On the eve of Stockholm+50, the International Science Council, Future Earth and Stockholm Environment Institute convened a group of diverse global experts under the observation of United Nations Environment Programme.

The scientists were asked to reflect on the Menton Message, its relevance today, and to write a new call to the world. The group assessed the letter against contemporary, robust and synthesized scientific knowledge while also speaking from the heart about what science shows is needed to achieve a healthy planet and a healthy future.
