Salah Soliman

Dr. Salah A. Soliman is a professor of Pesticide Chemistry and Toxicology with Alexandria University, Egypt since 1985. He graduated from the Department of Pesticide Chemistry of that University in 1967 where he was appointed as demonstrator until he received his PhD in 1975, then as a Lecturer (1975) and Associate Professor (1980). He joined the Environmental Toxicology Division of the Health Effects Research Laboratory (HERL) of the US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) in the Research Triangle Park (RTP, NC) as a Visiting Scientist from 1979 until the end of 1982. He continued his research on evaluating “the effect of occupational exposure to pesticides” in a cooperative study between Alexandria University in Alexandria and the USEPA in North Carolina from 1983 to 1987. Starting in 1989, Dr. Soliman spent a sabbatical leave at the King Saud University, Saudi Arabia, as a Visiting Professor for five years. In 1992, Dr. Soliman started to help the International Program on Chemical Safety (IPCS) of the World Health Organization (WHO), and became a member of the Joint Meeting of Pesticide Residues (JMPR) Program of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and (WHO). In 2002, Dr. Soliman became a Special Advisor at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA) beside his main occupation as a professor of Pesticide Chemistry and Toxicology. As of today, he is the organizer and founder of many activities in the BA including international conferences and meetings focusing on environmental affairs, science and technology, in addition to many activities to build capacities of young masters. In October 2006, Dr. Soliman was selected by Egypt's Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation to form a new National Committee for the Registration and Handling of Pesticides in Egypt and to develop rules needed to control these highly important issues. Dr. Soliman served as the Vice Chairman and Acting Chief of the committee until January 2011. Dr. Soliman supervised many MSc and PhD students who obtained degrees in Pesticide Chemistry and Toxicology. He teaches courses and supervises research in Alexandria University. He published more than 70 papers and several books and chapters in these fields. Dr. Soliman received the First Class Medallion for Science and Arts from the President of Egypt in 1981.
