GMBA is a platform for international and cross-disciplinary collaboration on the assessment, conservation and sustainable use of mountain biodiversity in a changing world.
Its main goals are to:
- promote, harmonise, explore and synthesise scientific research on current and future change in mountain biodiversity and in the provisioning of ecosystem services by mountain regions
- facilitate the access to and usage of research outcomes for scientists, policy makers and stakeholders in charge of the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity in mountain regions
- provide a framework for bottom-up involvement of policy makers and stakeholders in research efforts
GMBA was initiated by the Swiss Academy of Sciences in the year 2000 and inaugurated by DIVERSITAS in fulfillment of Agenda 21. It became a core project of Future Earth in Spring 2016. The GMBA International Programme Office is hosted by the University of Bern in Switzerland.
