Climate Change
The central bodies for international climate change processes are the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the science assessment body, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Future Earth has observer status with both UNFCCC and IPCC, which means that we send delegates to the UNFCCC conferences and IPCC meetings, showcase our community’s research through side events, press conferences, and statements, nominate experts to various panels and workshops, and make submissions ahead of the negotiations.
Future Earth engages with IPCC directly by nominating people as coordinating lead authors, lead authors and review editors for the IPCC Assessment Reports and Special Reports. Our community is also encouraged to contribute as Expert Reviewers on the first and second order drafts of the reports.

Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services
The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the Intergovernmental science-policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) are the two avenues through which Future Earth regularly engages with the international biodiversity processes. The CBD is the main negotiating body and IPBES the main science assessment body.
Future Earth holds observer status with CBD and IPBES, enabling us to nominate experts from the Future Earth community to participate in COPs, meetings, workshops, working groups, fellowships, and assessments. These opportunities allow our community to highlight their research at an international scale, helping to shape and reframe policy around relevant biodiversity issues.
