Chinese scientists from Future Earth, including the director of Future Earth’s hub in China, Professor Wenjie Dong, co-organized a side event at COP27 called Climate Change and Sustainable Development in the Post-COVID-19 Era. The scientists discussed tackling climate change while achieving the goal of carbon neutrality, balancing economic growth and low carbon development, the potential for carbon reduction in the transport sector, and more.
Professor Dong was quoted in an article about the event in China’s Science and Technology Daily newspaper:
“Professor Wenjie Dong, Secretary-General of the United Nations Consultative Environment Committee of the China Association for Science and Technology and Dean of the School of Atmospheric Sciences of Sun Yat-sen University, mentioned in his opening speech that the new crown epidemic has not weakened the importance and urgency of addressing climate change and sustainable development, and people still face an increasingly severe energy crisis, global greenhouse gas concentrations are still at record highs, and the risk of extreme weather events is still increasing.”
